Several antibiotics are effective in the treatment of Lyme disease. Doxycycline, a semisynthetic derivative of tetracycline is the most preferred as of today. Patients who are treated in later stages of the disease also respond well to antibiotics. However, additional antibiotic treatment is necessary for those who face a persistent infection. Damage to joints or the nervous system can develop in patients with late chronic Lyme disease. These patients are those in whom Lyme disease was unrecognized in the early stages or for whom experienced unsuccessful treatment at first.
